Step 2: GIVE UP WHAT YOU WANT NOW FOR WHAT YOU WANT MOST
What you want right now is almost never going to line up with what you want most of all. And that’s because what you want now is usually really easy and what you most is usually really hard. The key to this step is making the most important thing to you the most important thing you’re doing. Don’t let yourself get distracted by simpler things. Don’t let your feelings urge you to do something easier. Don’t let your drift back off to sleep. Fight through it all! Delaying your gratification from instantly trivial to eventually awesome makes all the difference.
Step 3: BE GLAD YOU DID, DON’T WISH YOU HAD
You may ask, “Who cares if I get started? Why should I bother giving up what I want now for what I want most?” The answer is, YOU, DAMMIT! You’re the one who’s going to care when your life sucks and you’re sitting around disappointed in yourself wishing you had done something or accomplished anything. That’s when you will be glad you did and not wish you had. You can either let difficulties get in your way and spend your life saying, “I wish I had.” Or you can overcome the obstacles and live your life saying, “I’m glad I did.” In the end the pain or discomfort of doing something is temporary, but the benefits you extract from it are forever.
