Majors. It’s a very straight forward topic; but we must address it directly here because choosing a major is the single most important choice we have to make in college.
Whichever major we graduate with will end up becoming the blueprint we will use to build our future. I know that sounds intense, however choosing a major isn’t as bad as it may seem.
For starters, we must follow these 3 Major Tips immediately.
Tip #1: Choose a Liberal Arts major if nothing else seems right at the moment.
Tip #2: Beware and steer clear of the ‘Undeclared Major’ label.
Tip #3: Repeat tips #1 and #2. Don’t wait to declare a major sometime in the future. Because the longer we wait to declare a major the harder it is to do.
The reason we need to declare a major now is because if we find ourselves with a 2.5 overall GPA., we probably will not be kicked out of our major.
On the other hand, if we don’t have a major and find ourselves with a 2.5 overall GPA., it is very difficult to get into a major.
Basically, colleges make it much easier on students who choose a major and than change, than it does on students who remain undeclared and plan to pick up a major in the future. That’s critical when learning how to choose a major in college.
Furthering the point, we need to realize that if we continue pushing off declaring a major, it may be a mistake we never recover from. Sure, not declaring a major for a semester or two doesn’t seem like a big deal.
However, once we get ourselves ingrained in the college social scene, some students end up not doing so well in class.
Then, it will not be up to those students to choose a major anymore, because their GPA will be too low. The choice will be for the major they finally choose, to either accept or reject them.
That’s how we can ‘undeclare’ ourselves out of a major; and possibly right out of college.
On the other hand, it is relatively easy to get into a major as a freshman. All we have to do in most cases is declare one, but it doesn’t stay that simple.
The longer we wait to choose a major, the greater chance we take that our GPA, or overall status, will drop below the minimum requirements of the major we finally choose.
At that point, we are stuck fighting to get into a major that we could have simply signed up for in the beginning. That’s an important understanding when learning how to choose a major in college.
Yes, choosing a major is better than not choosing one. However, many students fear that whatever major they choose will end up being the wrong one.
That fear is understandable, but we always need to remember that we can change our major later on if need be. We can change it multiple times as long as we keep our GPA up.
That’s why the best thing to do is to declare a major we feel is right, even if we’re not 100% certain we will stay with it all the way through to graduation.
Then, once we declare a major we need to first take classes that can be used as general education requirements, or free electives, in other majors.
This will give us time to do more research to determine exactly which major is the best one for us without taking any wasted classes.
Finally, once classes begin let’s all set out to be artists in whatever major we choose in college. What I mean by that is, let’s all make our majors a source of self-expression by putting our personal stamp on everything we do.
That’s what separates students who just have a major, from the students who are in a major. That is also why we must continue searching for a major where we feel self-expressed.
Because when we feel self-expressed we’ll be more excited, and when we’re more excited we perform better at things. Even majoring in subjects like accounting can be a great source of self-expression for some students.
So, let’s never limit ourselves when it comes to our major. That’s the core aspect of finally unlocking how to choose a major in college.
