How To Develop A Growth Mindset Now

We may think of school as a building or a campus where we go to learn and grow.

It has a starting time, an ending time, and is built around a schedule.

‘School’ has always been a physical thing for most us; but from now on ‘school’ isn’t a place anymore, it’s an understanding.

This understanding is between us and the world around us. Everything we see, everyone we communicate with, and every emotion we feel are all our teachers.

The understanding comes when we realize this and embrace the fact that we will be learning new things and growing as a person for the rest of our lives.

Sadly, some people never acknowledge how to develop a growth mindset and live as if they know everything they will ever need to know.

Of course, these individuals still discover new things on a daily basis; however, without the growth mindset, the lessons involved are difficult to come by and are often fought off instead of embraced.

In the end, this individual lives their life well below their potential and is usually not a very happy or fulfilled person. Basically, people who dismiss the growth mindset do not age like the rest of us.

They don’t turn 30, 40, 50, 60, and so on. Instead they turn an under-developed 20 + 10, 25 + 15, 30 + 20, 35 + 25, and so on.

It is true that attending a traditional school may be over for some of us. However, the traditional schooling we did complete was just the prerequisite for our real education in how to develop a growth mindset.

This education begins when we open ourselves up to the understanding that we are never finished expanding our awareness.

That is the underlying secret to all education and fully learning how to develop a growth mindset. Education is not about retaining facts, learning formulas, and completing levels. Those are all just methods of helping us expand our awareness.

Opportunities to expand our awareness will find us everywhere we go for the rest of our lives. It’s up to us to realize that our education is not over, and that no matter how smart or aware we may be, we are never smart or aware enough.

Let’s not fall into the trap of spending our entire lives obsessed with being considered an expert. That’s not how to develop a growth mindset. Rather than chasing expertise, simply enjoy the process of learning and the knowledge will come to us.

Always remember that no matter how knowledgeable we become, we will only be an “expert” to those who know less than we do about a given subject.

We must never lose the hunger to expand our awareness, and do everything we can to retain the childlike excitement of discovery.

Discovery is the greatest of all pursuits, be it the pursuit of success, peace, happiness, wealth or love. Discovery is the reason all of us get out of bed in the morning.

What will we discover today? What can we find today that I have never encountered before? What can we expand on that is currently in our lives and how far can it go?

Childlike discovery does not have to end when we grow up; it only has to evolve into a personal understanding of how to develop a growth mindset.

Our teachers, classrooms, and fellow students are everywhere when we embark on how to develop a growth mindset. This ‘growth mindset’ way of life will only serve us; it will never attempt to hurt or hold us back.

Yes, some of the classes will be very painful along the way.

However, we must keep the faith that the pain we feel from time to time is only the sensation of our awareness growing faster than our ability to process it can handle.

Even in the darkest and most painful times we must remember to take comfort in the fact that whatever happens, it is molding us into a more complete, experienced, and educated person.

We need to also understand that we will make mistakes. But we must never forget that making mistakes is a large part of the growth mindset process.

Yes, at times we will be unquestionably and irrefutably wrong. We all need to be ready and accepting of just how wrong we are going to be at times.

So when those times come, let’s not fight against them; instead let’s study them. Let’s all celebrate our wrongness, our shortcomings, and our faults.

Let’s learn from them and proceed forward. That’s what learning how to develop a growth mindset is all about.

Lastly, when we feel the need to be right boiling in our stomachs, or when the compulsion to prove our intellect begins to cloud our compassion; we must let it go.

We need to let it go and enjoy the rewards of knowing that the growth mindset is at work making us more evolved and stronger individuals.

That’s ultimately how to develop a growth mindset while further tapping into our inborn power. This will bring us closer to living as the most complete version of ourselves immediately.

* Action Step *

List three topics that you have never studied but that you have always found interesting.

Now, pick one of these topics and go the library or your local bookstore and buy a “beginners” guide to this subject. If that bothers you, do it anyway.

Never be weird about purchasing beginners guides. Being excited about something that you have very little knowledge of is a very strong character trait.

It’s the core of how to develop a growth mindset. Do it.
